Once your car is over 3 years old, you have to start taking it for an MOT every year. It is wise to check some of your cars systems prior to taking it for its MOT. That way your car is more likely to pass first time. If your car fails you have only10 days to get it repaired and re-tested, but you will have to pay for another MOT. Make sure that your brakes and handbrake are working properly. If you have to pull the handbrake up a long way before it goes on have the cable repaired. If your brakes feel spongy or are unresponsive, get them repaired too.

If the car is pulls to one side or the ride quality is poor, then the steering or suspension needs to be looked at. Steering is part of the MOT. Push the car down on each corner; it should bounce back up immediately. If it does not, your shock absorbers may need replacing.

If you have chips on your windscreen, get them repaired prior to the MOT. Likewise, if your wiper blades leave smears, replace these too. Top up your screen washer prior to the test.

Check your exhaust for leaks. Do this with the help of a friend; get them to put a thick cloth over the end of your exhaust. Get in the car, put the handbrake on and start the car. If the car stalls straight away you have no holes in your exhaust system, if it does not you may need to get your exhaust repaired prior to its MOT.

The MOT also tests for high CO2 emissions. If your exhaust fumes smell strong, you need to find out why prior to the MOT and get the problem resolved.
